January 20 Newsletter

To the Lighthouse!

Last week we enjoyed learning all about lighthouses in connection with our project on lamps, lanterns, and lights. You can find pictures chronicling our week in the preceding post. I think the children enjoyed this portion of our project most of all. Here's a peak at what we learned:

We began our study of lighthouses by viewing various lighthouses on the East Coast. Students learned about day marks and how these different patterns help ships recognize lighthouses during the day. We learned that the colors red, black, and white show up best against the blue sky, but we allowed for creative freedom when designing our own day marks. Check out our designs in the post with pictures.

We also learned about lighthouses have been at risk of being lost. Many students were familiar with our own Cockspur Island lighthouse, but on this particular day we focused on the Cape Hatteras lighthouse in North Carolina. Students loved watching the documentary about the moving of this lighthouse and they LOVE to talk about it.

Beth Hodges from the lighthouse on Tybee came to speak to both Kindergarten classes in preparation for our visit to the lighthouse. She provided students with more in depth information about day marks, the uses for lighthouses, types of lighthouses, and the history of the Tybee Light.

Best of all, we visited the lighthouse on Tybee Island! We had a FABULOUS trip. All of our guides at the lighthouse were wonderful and very informative. Check out our pictures to see all we saw on our trip! A huge thanks goes out to all of the parents who drove and chaperoned for this trip! We could not have done this without you! Thank you so much for helping make experiences like this possible for the kids. We are so fortunate at TIMA to have such wonderful, supportive parents!

One final thanks to everyone at the lighthouse! This trip was a wonderful gift to our school and students. We are so very lucky to be a part of the Tybee community.
