Our Behavior System

Did your child come home last week saying they were on "Smooth Sailing"? Did they very excitedly tell you they made it to "A Day at the Beach"? Were they happy to report they were on the "Lighthouse", but got it together? Did you wonder what in the world all of this meant??

Meet our behavior management system! Each child has a clip with their name on it that starts at Smooth Sailing each morning. Throughout the day, clips can move continuously up and down on the chart based on each student's behavior. Here's what each level means:

  • A Day at the Beach: This level is at the very top of our chart. It is reserved for the one or two students each day who exhibit exemplary behavior. If a student ends the day at this level, they receive a trip to the treasure chest. I will also report this achievement in their Parent-Teacher Communicator.
  • Smooth Sailing: All students start the day at this level and it represents behavior that is on target for Kindergarten. Each day, it should be your child's goal to end on Smooth Sailing. Occasionally, I will reward each child that ends the day on this level with a small treat such as a sticker.
  • Lighthouse: This level is a warning. When your child is at this level they have been warned to stop a particular behavior. If they "get it together" and begin behaving, they can move back from this level. I will not report a Lighthouse day in your child's communicator. Everyone makes mistakes and the most important thing is to learn from them and move forward. That's what the Lighthouse is all about.
  • On the Rocks: This is the final level on our chart. Being on this level indicates repeated misbehavior(s) even with repeated warnings. A day "On the Rocks" will be discussed with the child and reported in their communicator with a note about the particular misbehavior.
If you ever have any questions about your child's behavior, please feel free to contact me! We had a lot of children on "Smooth Sailing" all last week. I am so proud of these sailors!
