Newspaper Guest Speakers

Over the past two weeks, we have been visited by many guests from the Savannah Morning News. We are so thankful for their support of our news project and project-based learning at TIMA! Each guest brought a new perspective and taught different skills to the students. All guests immersed the students in the world of newspapers and added great richness to our project. Read on to find out what we learned from each guest and look below for pictures of these awesome experiences.

Julia Ritchey taught students about the "5 Ws" reporters use in creating a story. She led students in creating answers to the questions based on their stories and also briefly shared about how she used these techniques and reporter tools while covering the 2008 Olympics in China.

Mary Landers from the Savannah Morning News taught students how to conduct an interview. Students then interviewed Beth Palmer from the Tybee Island Marine Science Center about Ike, a sea turtle born on Tybee. Students were allowed to take pictures, record videos, and ask Beth questions. Mary then used the content to create a post for her blog.

Kim Wade answered students' questions about what it is like to be a reporter. She allowed students to practice their new-found interviewing skills by interviewing her about her own experiences.
